Exposure to Prolongeld Suffering
Oppression may be defined as prolonged cruel or unjust treatment and control; subjugation of the spirit/mind-body as well as mental pressure or distress.
The oppression and suppression of spirit (denying expression of authentic identity or true-being) interferes with access to emotions, essential components for an authentic selfhood. The research of Dr. Candace Pert and colleague indicates that initial emotional overwhelm and later reduced access to emotions (to maintain self-integrity) impedes self-actualization. Pert also cites findings by Dr. Steven Cole and colleagues that concealing one’s identity–“emotions, personality traits, and proclivities (e.g., insight, humor, self-expression, honest communication with others) can compromise the healing system”.
Pert and colleagues propose that balanced emotional expression and resolution is the psychospiritual correlate of a properly balanced flow of neuropeptides (and endocrine secretions) throughout the body-mind system generating a functional healing system that perhaps even minimizes or controls epigenetic methylenated expression. According to researchers Roger Booth and Kevin Ashbridge, the psychoneuroimmune subsystems are engage in the common goal of “maintaining harmony within and without the organism”, establishing and maintaining self-identity as well as the broader process of self-determination to “uphold organismic integrity”.
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) and Trauma
The experience of adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and trauma often removes a validating, relationship-base context to support and nourish self identity and resiliency. Dr. Maryanna Eckberg indicates ongoing chronic stressors and trauma contributes to the development of a posttraumatic identity–organizing one’s life and self-perception around a survival mode of functioning. As the spirit and true being regresses, “. . . [the] survivor may become shy, withdrawn, and fearful person, who leads a constricted and isolated life” or “. . . highly activated, flooded, overwhelmed, and constantly overextended.”
In addition, Dr. Eckberg affirms that the inability to relieve distress via supportive interaction leads to dissociation (including somatization), re-enactment, or drugs to increase natural opioids and reduce cortisol levels, if relief is not available through community and human contact. Relationship via supportive interaction naturally produces opioids, oxytocin, and prolactin. These substrates calm the bioneurological system and promote healing. Addiction to fill the void of relationship or attachment is a relationship (e.g., with alcohol, drugs, sex, etc.) that mirrors relationships with Self, family, and community, which also are dysfunctional and out of harmony.
Unhealed emotions and experiences (i.e., ancestral/transgenerational/historical trauma); coping mechanisms/behaviors; and related biophysiological changes may be passed down for multiple generations. Dr. Bessell Van der Kolk’s research indicated that trauma is not only stored in the neocortex and limbic areas of the brain; but, also in the cells and the RNA/DNA. Historical/cultural/racial trauma and transgenerational CPTSD are further compounded by childhood abuse, neglect, and early separation; insecure attachment; codependency; alcohol and substance use/abuse; addiction and other adverse experiences.
Emotional pain and suffering (including grief/loss, anger, isolation, feeling numb and/or disconnected +) acts as underlying stressors; which, increase daily life stress and affect health and interactions. Insomnia or unrestful sleep, poor digestion, insufficient hydration, and low nutrient-dense foods contribute to metabolic stress depleting the body’s resources. Socio-economic, work-life, partner, family, social/community, and environmental/geopathic factors also may exacerbate challenges in maintaining emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual balance
ReSET Healing Communities
Ancient cultures understood relationship as the fabric of life. These cultures (and their medicine systems) embraced a holistic approach to life intertwined with nature; curating harmonic relationships within our body, home/environment, loved ones/family, and local-global community. Altruistic, reciprocal relationship anchors our humanity; it is the foundation of identity and community development. The quality of our relationships nurtures the heart/spirit-soul-body, ease the mind, deepen connection, attune awareness, and contribute to the coherency of our daily experiences.
The ReSET Community Healing Program is based on nature’s model of relationship being the fabric of life. Relationship is embeded in everyday way of being and way of seeing/sensing and relating to one another and world. Unresolved imbalances in relationship may contribute to conflict, emotional wounding, pain/suffering, and trauma + that affect spirit-heart/mind-soul-body contributing to dysregulation within an individual person, family/lineages, and the collective community.
Addressing emotional pain and trauma is essential for fulfilling relationships, health, and wellbeing. Integrating psycho-neuroendocrinology research, the psychosomatic network model, and cultural restorative systems; we work with people to heal and resolve multi-generational and other underlying relational patterns that contribute to emotional dysregulation; which impairs executive functioning and heightens chronic stress or trauma responses. Emotional dysregulation is a significant factor in sustained hormonal, metabolic, and immune inbalances that contribute to the development of chronic stress-related conditions.
ReSET Services
ReSET Healing Communities offer heart-centered, safe space and resources for recovery from adversity/trauma (personal, multi-generational) and restoring inner relationship. In addition to healing depthwork, authentic expression is explored while developing an aligning narrative (re-storying) with additional tools to shift ways of navigating interactions and being in relationship.
